The festival is an intergenerational scene, an audiovisual mirror, a window, where the eyes of the community are open unto itself. “We express ourselves to heal, as in a rap song or poetry,” to tell a story, any story, to anyone. In filmmaking, deep inside, we are all equal. Film brings us together.

“Polisombras” Green Silt Fence
Silt fences, so familiar to everyone in Bogotá given the many urban planning projects that have taken place in the city since Mayor Enrique Peñalosa was elected in 1998, have transformed Bogotá into a city “under construction.” Silt fences, mostly known as “green fabric,” are made of polypropylene and are used on construction sites to control sediment.

The “Ojo al Sancocho” Film Festival begins with a tour around Ciudad Bolívar. One of the stops is a fantastic outlook that allows people to contemplate the panoramic view of the city. From there, one can easily identify how the city is effectively “under construction.” The green fabric has become a symbol of displacement, with every little green dot indicating a displaced family that has just arrived. The green silt fences used in construction on one side of the city are recycled to construct homes on the other.

The Spanish group “Traficantes de Sueños” (Dream Traffickers) brought to the festival the idea of producing a movie by fragments, in no chronological order, as a collective creation with free reign that is produced using chain collaboration and the license system of Creative Commons. As an index of the process, the film is started, put it on the Internet, and others are allowed to continue, improve, or finish it.

El Origen de la Pintura
THE ORIGIN OF PAINTING
Marianne Evans-Lombe
A performance that tells the story of the origin of painting through a myth. With the light of a bonfire and the rhythm of “Hatuey” a popular music band, the artist begins a ritual whereby each person is called, one by one, to offer their shadow to the painting. The artist begins the exercise at night by the light of the bonfire, which makes the shadowplay even more dramatic, and invites her colleague to project their shadow freely on a wall. Once the silhouette is formed and outlined using chalk, another person is invited to offer his/her shadow, having the former shadowplayer become painter, and so on, and so on. The process becomes a great silhouette chain reaction. The result is a huge mural in which everyone in the room is represented. People then can read the wall, guessing who’s who, and write on it leaving their speculations or messages. It is a wonderful activity that brings the community together. Everyone feels they have been recognized, even if in an abstract way.

I don’t have a handicap, I just can’t walk.” Segregator project uses communication strategies to take the web to the streets. It is a web they created to provide information about different handicaps, to change what they consider to be absurd welfare and people’s attitudes of “pity” into a completely new way of thinking about handicaps. Their project criticizes the segregation of the handicapped community.

Recuperation of public space. Displaying a white sheet in the middle of the town’s main square in times of decade-long violence is a symbol of peace, of truce for the inhabitants who are tired of not being able to go out on the streets. It is a brave act of peaceful resistance by a town that is reclaiming this space as its own, demonstrating resistance around a movie projected on the fabric each night.
